It was an exciting Saturday at Riverview Gabriel Richard for the Catholic League Basketball Quarterfinals. Having finished fifth in the league, Ladywood was matched up to play Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard in the first round of the tournament. The two times the teams faced off in the regular season, Irish came out on top. The first game with a score of Ladywood 42 and FGR 45, and the second time 22 and 30. As they say, it is difficult to beat a team three times.
The Blazers came out on fire in the first quarter taking the lead 14-6. A couple easy buckets allowed the Irish to come back and the teams went into halftime with a score of 24-20, Ladywood still never losing the lead. In the third quarter, Ladywood held FGR to 6 points – one three pointer and three free throws. Going into the fourth quarter the Blazers tried to advance the lead even more with a score of 32-26. The Blazers undeniable defense held the Irish again to 6 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 12-6, making the final score, Ladywood 44 and FGR 22.
The team’s unstoppable offense came down to Junior Katherine Ambrose who had 19 of Ladywood’s 44 points. She also had 1 steal, 8 rebounds, and went 5/5 from the free throw line. Amy Babon was the team’s second highest scorer with 10, and also had 3 assists and 2 steals. Senior Guard Kate Roney contributed 5 points, 1 assist, and 3 steals. Abbey Reppen chipped in 2 points, with 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Sophomore Ellie Reppen contributed 7 points and 5 rebounds.
Ladywood will continue in the Catholic League tournament by playing Marian in the semifinals, Wednesday, February 14th, at Catholic Central at 5:30. Come out and support your Blazers!
