Blazers News · Basketball vs. Shrine: The Final Home Game

Tuesday, February 6th, was a date the basketball teams were originally looking forward to, but as the time neared, they did not want the night to come. The 5:30 and 7:00 game times were the last time the JV and Varsity teams would play in Ladywood’s gym. The Blazers were happy to host fellow Catholic League school, Shrine.

The JV Basketball Team was inspired to turn their season record out of their mind and come out victorious for their last home game. The Blazers led the Knights in every quarter except one, and held them to only 3 points in the entire second half. Ladywood came out on top with a final score of 24-11. Emma Snead contributed a free throw; Rachel Paulin with two points; Riley Johnson and Sam Serra both with 4 points; and Freshman Claire McClorey led the Blazers with 13 points. JV plays Monday, February 12th, in the first round of the CHSL JV Sectional Tournament at St. Catherine’s vs. Mercy at 5:30.

In between the JV and Varsity games, the parents of all players and the seniors were celebrated for all their success throughout the season and during their careers here at Ladywood.

The Varsity Basketball Team came out motivated just like the JV team. With emotions running high as it was not only senior night but the also the last home game, they wanted to make a mark on the gymnasium. And so they did. Surrounded by teammates, students, family and alumnae in the stand, the last varsity game was marked as a W with a final score of 38-25. Main contributors to the Blazers win were Senior Natasha Strzelewicz with 10 points, Senior Kate Roney  with 3 assists, Senior Abbey Reppen with 6 points, 13 boards, 3 assists, and Senior high-scorer Amy Babon with 12 points, 6 boards, and 2 steals.

Following the game, a ceremony was held for all current basketball players and alumnae who were present. Varsity Coach, Tom Bushart, requested that the game be called with 1 second remaining on the clock. After the whistle, all in attendance gathered underneath the north basket where we explained that the 1 second symbolizes that our time in this gymnasium and our time as a Blazer will never come to an end. Wherever the girls may go next year or down the road, they will always be a Blazer, and Ladywood will always be their home. To commemorate the night and to allow the Blazers to keep a piece of their home with them, each player and alumnae cut down a piece of the net to carry with them.

The Varsity Team will continue their play in the CHSL playoffs this week, and we wish them all the best!
