Girls Varsity Hockey · Field Hockey crowned CHSL Champs!

It was an exciting week this past week for the Varsity Field Hockey Team!

In the semifinals of the CHSL Field Hockey Finals, Ladywood faced Father Gabriel Richard. With evenly matched play in the first half, the teams headed to halftime with a 0-0 score. It didn’t take long for Junior Forward Bridget Folk to help our offense. After a couple of opportunities, Folk finally hit one in with 18 minutes left to make it 1-0. FGR tried to respond but our defense and goalkeeper Carly Fraker locked them down. With 50 seconds of the game, Junior Anna Isgro sealed the victory for the Blazers. Final score was 2-0.

The Blazers then headed to the D-II CHSL Finals on Saturday, October 8th, at Madonna and faced the St. Catherine Stars. The Stars got a quick start and scored within the first 8 minutes of the game. Anna Isgro once again fired up our offense two minutes later and responded with a goal. Our offense pushed up even more and Bridget Folk was able to slide one past the defense with 8 minutes left in the first half.

With a 2-0 lead going into halftime, the team stressed defense, and they did just that. Paulina Jarzembowski, Jessie Drennan, and Madison Wasen were able to stop and clear any passes that headed their way. Wasen was able to switch the field with her powerful drives, and our mids Claire Haase, Jenna Kozlowski, and Kate Roney were right there waiting to advance to the other end. The Blazers counted down from 10 and stormed the field after the buzzer hit.

Notable performances must go to our two goalkeepers of the day. Junior Maelyn Thayer started the game in goal and made several vital saves. Once out of the goal, she used her momentum to help our offense and almost scored herself. Senior Carly Fraker came and took over in goal for the remainder of the game where she secured the shut-out in the second half.

After the championship trophy was presented, four of our Blazers were recognized for their accomplishments during the season. Senior Jenna Kozlowski was awarded for All-Academic. Seniors Kate Roney and Carly Fraker were named to the All-League Team, and Senior Claire Haase was named to the All-Catholic Team.

Congratulations to our seniors who were awarded at the conclusion of the game, and a very special congratulations to our 2017 Varsity Field Hockey Team being named D-II CHSL Champs!
